I arrived home at 7:30 pm tonight.
Towards the beginning of my trip, I asked Kenny (via text message) for a status update, and all he would tell me was that it wasn’t good and that we’d talk when I got home.
My grandmother did not have a stroke. According to her neurosurgeon, she had a “primal bleeding,” whereby something in her brain (a blood vessel) ruptured, causing her brain to fill with blood. I’m not sure exactly what led up to it except that she woke up yesterday and told the aide she didn’t feel well, had breakfast and went back to bed. When the aide went in to check on her, she found my grandmother shaking uncontrollably.
The aide called the ambulance, and on the way to the hospital, my grandmother was conscious and asking whether or not she was ok.
Sometime after she arrived at the first hospital, doctors sedated her in order to run whatever tests. But between yesterday and this morning, she slipped into a coma. Now, they’re saying she’s in a vegetative state.
I’m not sure everything is matching up because we’ve been getting different stories. According to the neurosurgeon who studied her charts, it would appear that the primal bleed was caused by high cholesterol and high blood pressure. When grandma arrived, her blood pressure was supposedly high…leading me (naturally) to believe that the aide wasn’t administering her medications- but we can’t prove that yet.
Tomorrow, my mother and I are supposed to go to the hospital in the afternoon to speak to the doctors. It bothers me to know that my grandmother was fully conscious on the ride over and also that we don’t know exactly what happened before the ambulance arrived. I would never be able to get over the possibility that all of this may have been prevented. I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.
Lord, give me strength.
