What does it mean to pursue a career while raising a small child?
The guilt is real. The pressure I put on myself to “succeed” at everything—at being a good mom, a good employee, a good partner, a good human—feels heavier now, and in a more intense way than I’ve ever known.
The questions became constant
The questions are constant and LOUD:
Should I have gone back to work full-time so soon?
Am I missing time I’ll never get back?
Am I doing enough—for her? For work? For myself?
Am I still me in all of this?
A lot of people will tell you how wonderful it is to become a parent—how fulfilling, how life-changing, how full your heart will feel. And they’re right. It IS all of those things.
But nobody tells you how easily you can lose yourself in the juggle.
The identity shift nobody talks about
What often goes unspoken is the identity shift that quietly takes place in the background. How the things that once made you feel like you—your work, your passions, your time, your space—can slowly get pushed aside. And how HARD it can be to find your way back to yourself while still showing up for everyone else.
Even with hybrid work, the structure of the workday isn’t built for moms. There are still hard choices to make daily, still the fear of being judged, still the weight of trying to do it all—and the emotional toll that comes when something inevitably slips.
I want my child to see a woman who chased her dreams and carried hers too.
That is the version of motherhood that I’m striving for.
It reminds me that I’m not failing—I’m doing both.
I’m pursuing a life of meaning FOR her, not just in spite of her.
And maybe, just maybe, she’ll grow up seeing a version of womanhood that includes ambition, sacrifice, tenderness, resilience, and grace.
